THE REVEREND SARAH AVERETTE-PHILLIPS

PASTOR

Reverend Sarah Averette-Phillips is a Southern California native from Redlands, CA. She received her BA in Peace Studies from UCC-related Chapman University in 2012. Following graduation from Chapman, Sarah spent a year living in Varanasi, India, pursuing a Masters in Conflict Management & Development. While in Varanasi, she also worked with an organization combating human trafficking in Nepal and Northern India. Upon return from Varanasi, Sarah enrolled at Claremont School of Theology, completing her Master of Divinity in May of 2017. She was called as BCUCC’s settled pastor in September 2019, and brings energy for preaching, engaging young folks in the church, and connecting the Gospel with contemporary justice issues. Sarah lives in Pasadena, CA, with her spouse Omari, and dog Thistle. She enjoys crafting and traveling to new countries.

THE REVEREND MICHAEL LEWIS

Reverend Michael Lewis has a Bachelor’s degree from Graceland University in speech communication and a juris doctorate from the University of California at Berkeley, Boalt Hall School of Law. He received the final year of his legal education at Harvard Law School. Michael has been active in various forms of ministry for over 30 years, originally as an ordained minister in the Community of Christ before making his way to the UCC over 10 years ago. Michael is a lifelong student, especially of process theology, and focuses his ministry now on worship leadership and preaching.

Music Director & Accompanist

Jessica received her teaching credential and Bachelor of Arts in Liberal Arts Music from California State University Fullerton. Beginning her formal music training at age 4, Jessica has studied classical and jazz piano, and classical voice. She joined Brea Congregational UCC in 2014 and currently works at Disneyland full-time. Jessica and her husband, Matt, were married at BCUCC in the summer of 2015.

Organist

Alice has a Bachelor of Music for Organ Performance from California State University, Fullerton, and was trained by Esther Jones, Norberto Guinaldo, and Justin Colyar. Skilled at playing the organ, piano, harpsichord, and flute, Alice is also a member of the Orange County Chapter of the American Guild of Organists, leading the committee for children’s scholarship study grants. Alice has been the organist and choir accompanist at Brea Congregational UCC Church since 2004.

Kimly Hoang

Kimly Hoang

Administrator

Kimly has a Bachelor of Arts in Business Administration from California State University, Fullerton. She has worked at Brea Congregational for the last 6 years, since 2016. She has been attending Brea Congregational church for over a decade. Kimly is also a songwriter, having written some songs for the church, and is actively pursuing her career in the music industry.

Aidan Mitchell

Aidan Mitchell

Sunday School

Aidan is currently a student at California State University Fullerton working on her Bachelor of Arts in English. Aidan began working with the children and youth at Brea Congregational in the summer of 2021 and strives to find fun and engaging ways to lead Sunday School each week. When she is not being crushed under a mound of homework, Aidan enjoys spending time with her two black cats, Soot Sprite and Rowan, reading, writing, and doing anything that helps procrastinate her writing.

Randy Fredriksz

Randy Fredriksz

Custodian

Randy has been taking care of the janitorial duties at Brea Congregational since 1999. What he has enjoyed most working for the church is the opportunity to meet and work with a great group of people, including the preschool staff and the different groups that rent the hall for their meetings. He is married to his beautiful wife of 28 years, Bettina, and has one son and one daughter. Randy enjoys gardening and dabbles in bonsai.
